The Origins Of Celtic Cross Tattoo Designs

Note: This article is meant to give you an explanation of the origins of the Celtic Tattoo Art. If you wish to check out the actual desings, you can do this here.

Ancient Celtic culture has always been considered mystical and intriguing. The early Celts were famous for their abilities to create exceptional artwork of metal, jewelry, and even weapons. Celtic people were also known for their skills as warriors;   the Romans regarded them as tough fighters. There are plenty of examples and evidence of Celtic crosses and renown Celtic artwork throughout Ireland.
As every nation, the Celts have evolved over time and created symbols for themselves along the way. In North America, the successors of the Celts often wear these symbols toshow their Celtic roots to the world.  The knowledge and symbols have been passed down over the years; unfortunately, written history is almost non-existant.  Nowadays, it’s the tattooing that keeps the Celtic tradition alive and the Celtic cross tattoo designs are among the most sought after motiffs.
The most  Celtic tattoo designs are of Irish origin, as the evidence of Celtic history in Ireland  is probably the strongest in the world. In Dublin’s Trinity College there are lots of manuscripts that document the Celtic heritage and symbols. The popular Celtic Cross tattoo designs consist of a cross and a circle around it. It is worth mentioning that from a symbolic point of view the cross and the circle differ greatly. The arms of the cross can be seen as pointing in four directions of the world, or as a representation of the four elements: Air, Earth Fire, and Water. The circle, on the other hand, is considered to be a symbol of eterntity and the endless love of God. Together, they create a unique symbolic shape that represents the joined forces of Heaven and Earth.
Those of a Celtic descent, Irish, Scots, or Welsh, usually find that a Celtic tattoo is a superb way of expressing  their heritage pride. The Celtic Cross tattoo designs, as well as other Celtic motiffs, are certainly not easy to do, most taking several hours. Celtic tattoo designs are considered by many tattoo artists to be among the hardest of all.
Should you decide on one of the Celtic Cross tattoo designs, make sure you find an artist capable of doing the tattoo.  As the designs tend to be very difficult, not all tattoo artists can do them.  It’s always best to find a tattoo artist who has some experience in Celtic designs, as this will increase the probability of the tattoo being done the way you expect it.  Click here to check out my tried and tested resource for Celtic Cross Tattoo Designs.
